At SMS, our benefits are one of the many ways we show our appreciation for our employee’s dedication and commitment. SMS is pleased to provide the following comprehensive benefits program to all full-time employees:



Effective with your first day of employment, group medical and dental insurance is available to all full-time employees. SMS pays a large percentage of the premium for both you and your family.


Our health plan offers comprehensive care, including coverage for hospitalization, surgery, routine office visits, preventive screenings, prescription drugs, behavioral health/substance abuse services, and many other benefits.


Our dental plan offers routine preventive care such as oral exams twice a year, prophylaxis and X-rays. Additional services such as fillings, root canal, crowns, implants, etc. are covered at a percentage after a deductible has been met.



SMS offers the choices of a medical, dependent care and/or transportation flexible spending account (FSA), which allows employees to set aside tax-free money to be used for reimbursement of eligible expenses. The plans also include the convenience of a debit card for further ease of use.


The medical FSA covers health, dental and vision expenses that are not covered by insurance, such as deductibles, co-payments, coinsurance amounts and non-covered items, such as eyeglasses. The dependent care FSA reimburses qualifying child care expenses. The mass transit FSA reimburses the fare for various forms of transit to include Metro, Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Trains, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Trains, buses and more.



Life is unpredictable! SMS feels it’s important to insure and protect the financial security for you and your family. We cover the premium for employee’s term life, short-term and long-term disability insurance.

The basic term life insurance is equal to one times annual earnings (minimum of $100,000, maximum of $300,000). You may purchase supplemental term life insurance at group rates equal to one to five times your base annual salary, not to exceed $750,000. Spouse and dependent coverage is also available at low group rates.

Short-term disability coverage is provided on a graduated scale based on your length of employment up to a maximum of six months.

SMS also covers long term disability for extended illnesses of more than six months.

SMS employment includes a 401(k) savings plan to help provide you with a solid foundation for your future retirement goals. The plan offers a wide variety of mutual fund investment options, brokerage account options and more importantly matches a portion of your deferral to supplement your retirement dollars.

In additional to our training benefits, SMS offers employees a tuition assistance benefit to help alleviate some of the tuition costs for approved courses taken at accredited colleges and universities.
