Client Success Stories - 9/11 Emergency Space

SMS Project Highlight

9/11 Emergency Space

Polk and Taylor Buildings
Crystal City, VA

As the terrorist controlled plane slammed into Wedge 1 of the Pentagon, the world changed forever. Immediately, DoD needed a home for over 3500 displaced military and civilian Pentagon workers. DoD immediately contacted SMS to complete emergency fit out on the Taylor and Polk buildings in Crystal City - sister buildings of Presidential Towers - the first Swing Space building SMS built.  SMS pulled the Presidential Towers plans and modified them for the Taylor and Polk building on the evening of 11 September. Over the next 6 days, SMS deployed SIPRNet, NIPRNet, Unclassified and Secret telephones for each of the 3500 tenants, deploying 108 Cisco switches, running batch 200 foot cable runs and programming and IPing over 7000 workstations in 6 short days.  The entire SMS Company pitched in to complete this effort to assist the DoD.

Overall the Pentagon Renovation drove the demand for local Swing Space facilities while the Pentagon went under renovation.  1500 Wilson Boulevard was a Swing Space facility encompassing 253,000 square feet and housing 1050 Air Force Pentagon tenants.  SMS was commissioned by United States Army Information Systems Engineering Command (USAISEC) to architect design and install the entire IT infrastructure for the facility.  SMS completed 18 telecommunications closets, data center, installed 1.25 million feet of cable plant, and fielded over 3000 network interfaces for the program.
